The 2026 Space Foundation induced into the Space Foundation Hall of Fame to the AI technology my colleagues & friends and I started years ago at Boston University. To the best of my knowledge, it’s the first explicitly AI technology to receive this recognition. The story began as an attempt to understand how brains compute, and how to build AI that learns and adapts like they do. That spark has grown over the years into technology deployed in ~80M devices, fully at the Edge: drones, robots, smartphones, industrial inspection systems, and more. Grateful to NASA, Mark Motter and everyone who believed in edge learning long before it was cool, and a ‘nostalgic’ thought to my several colleagues at Boston University with whom I worked in researching and translating this technology to practice.
